Old Shoes

That old pair of shoes

You don’t want them

You don’t need them

Not anymore

*

You keep them

But you never wear them

All worn out

Tattered and torn

*

It’s a wonder what you keep them for

Oh, when you bought them

You loved them so

You had so many good times

As you wore them almost everywhere you’d go

*

But they didn’t last forever

And now the sole is all but gone

And there they sit at the dark corner of your closet

Year after year after year

*

All things we once loved or had a use for can end like that

Friendships, love affairs, anything at all

All left at the bottom of a closet

All torn and tattered

These things that are now just memories we recall
