The Picnic

Put down the hamper

Open the lid

Take out the sandwiches

There’s enough here for you, me, Jane and Sid

*

Chomp chomp as we finally eat

The long drive from the city has taken us far into rural retreat

Between each bite is a joke, a memory or a story

*

We learn so much about each other

Moments shared, those of sadness and those of glee

Now it’s time for the cream cakes and to get out the flask of tea

*

One lump or two

It’s obvious to me

Let’s have one for the past

And another for all that is yet to be

*

And for now let’s just sit here

In the sun, under the tree

For today the world is a peaceful place

From this view it would be hard to disagree
